This is a 12-month programme, aimed at newly qualified Nurses or new to primary care Nurses, wishing to work in general practice.  Nurses will be employed as new GPNs, whilst completing training and a number of short courses.  Over the first 6 months, there is a strong early focus on clinical skills so that the trainee GPNs can bring practical skills to their GP Practices as early as possible. This training focuses on:

  • Venepuncture
  • Vaccination & Immunisation
  • Wound Care
  • Contraception & Sexual Health
  • Learning Disabilities
  • Motivational Interviewing
  • Quality Outcomes Framework
  • Mental Health
  • Introductions to Long Term Conditions (CVD/Diabetes/Asthma/COPD)

In the second 6-months, the new GPNs complete a long-term condition (LTC) module. Peer group learning sessions bring the whole group together and provide opportunities for the trainee GPNs to feed back on their experiences and to receive constructive advice and support. They also take part in structured and facilitated ‘Action Learning Sets’ which enable them to reflect on experiences, share ideas and concerns, and challenge perceptions in a trusting and supportive environment. Specific Practice Mentor support sessions provide an opportunity for Practice Nurse Mentors who are supporting the new GPNs to meet with the Training Hub Nurse Clinical Lead, and to enable them to feed back on their mentoring experiences and to share their ideas and/or concerns.  By the end of the 12-months, the new GPNs have gained the practical skills required to be a productive member of the General Practice Nursing workforce.

Currently there are two different GPN VTS models available – TPC Employed GPN VTS and the Practice/PCN Employed GPN VTS.  Both models follow the same structure noted above, but they differ in terms of employment and funding.  Details of these different models can be found below.

Practice/PCN Employed GPN VTS

Nurses will be employed on a permanent basis by the GP Practice or Primary Care Network (PCN) and be able to access the same 12 month programme of clinical training and support in line with the TPC Employed GPN VTS

You may already employ a new eligible GPN who you would like to complete the VTS.  If you are looking to recruit a new GPN to complete the training, we can assist by sharing your external job advertisements with our networks, and by putting you in contact with potential candidates who have expressed a keen interest in becoming GPNs and training through the VTS.

Eligibility Criteria

  • The GPN will be employed by your practice/PCN.
  • The GPN must be either newly qualified or new to primary care.
  • The GPN cannot have been in post for more than 12 months.
  • GPNs on the scheme must attend ALL clinical skills training sessions/peer support sessions.

Funding Details

Practices/PCNs will receive a bursary of £7,562 per GPN (to be paid in two instalments), towards releasing them for the core skills training and peer support sessions, which are all mandatory.

Additionally, under the 2025/2026 Network Contract DES published on 27 March 2025, funding is now available through the Additional Roles Reimbursement Scheme (ARRS) for ‘New to General Practice Nurses’, subject to meeting the necessary criteria. TPC Employed GPN VTS - applications are now closed

Trust Primary Care (TPC) Ltd will employ the Nurses on a fixed term 12-month contract.

Eligibility Criteria

Host GP practices should have a strong, experienced, and supportive nursing team who can provide a fantastic learning experience. Assigned Workplace Nurse Mentors should have sufficient knowledge of the GPN role and will have had at least 1 year’s post-registration experience and training as a GPN. There are no formal qualifications attached to the role of Workplace Mentor, and the West Yorkshire Primary Care Workforce and Training Hub clinical team are able to offer support and guidance to Workplace Mentors if needed.

Eligible VTS Nurses must be NMC registered (with NMC PIN) and either be newly qualified or new to General Practice.

Funding Details

A training grant of £4,000/year will be paid to the host GP practice in recognition for supporting and mentoring the trainee GPN.
