Bitesize sessions are 1-hour and consist of a 45-minute presentation on relevant primary care topics followed by a 15-minute Q&A session.

24/03/2026: Navigating Grief in your Workplace - A Manager’s Guide

This session is available for Managers.

Grief is something we will all experience at some stage in our lives, and we never know when bereavement will strike. When it does, it can affect us all in very different, unexpected ways. Navigating it in our workplaces can be a real challenge for both managers and staff, which can lead to feelings of helplessness.

This is the second in a series of Grief Bitesizes which have been designed by expert Helen McMenamin, specifically for The West Yorkshire Primary Care Workforce & Training Hub. The series includes a delivery of an introductory session (02/12/2025), then a specialist advice session for managers (24/03/2026), and also one for employees (23/06/2026).

This Bitesize will equip managers with the skills and knowledge to provide compassionate support to grieving employees in their practice/PCN. It’s run by grief expert and founder of the Flying Fish Company Helen McMenamin, who will give detailed expert advice on:

  • Understanding the Impact of Grief in the Workplace: How can grief affect productivity, increase absenteeism, and cause high turnover of staff – and how can we mitigate this?
  • Practical Strategies for Support: How can adjustable working hours and flexibility help grieving employees? Plus, useful techniques for initiating and maintaining conversations.

09/04/2026: Menopause

This session is available for General Practice Nurses and Allied Health Professionals (AHPs).

The menopause is finally receiving extensive coverage, and discussions surrounding it are no longer considered taboo. After all, half of the population will experience it, while the other half is likely to be impacted by its effects on women in their lives, including work colleagues, family members, and friends.

18/05/2026: Ear Care

This session is available for General Practice Nurses, Healthcare Assistants & Allied Health Professionals.
Date: Monday 18th May 2026

Ear problems are one of the most common reasons patients present to primary care — from blocked ears and pain to hearing loss and infections. Yet, ear care is also an area where inappropriate management can lead to complications, unnecessary referrals, or missed pathology.
Session Includes:

  • A practical overview of ear care in the primary care setting.
  • Recognition and safe management of common ear conditions.
  • Exploring different approaches to earwax removal (including the pros and cons of ear irrigation vs microsuction).
  • Highlighting red flags requiring urgent referrals.

10/06/2026: Very Brief Advice on Smoking Cessation for Patients with Serious Mental Illness

This session is available for General Practice Nurses, Healthcare Assistants & Allied Health Professionals.

Very Brief Advice on Smoking, known as VBA, is a life-saving intervention delivered by health and social care practitioners that triggers quit attempts. VBA is recommended by NICE as evidence-based and cost-effective.

The training will equip staff to have a “30 second conversation to save a life”. (NCSCT)

Session Includes:

Increasing understanding that those with an SMI are more likely to smoke and 50% die from smoking related illnesses.

Asking about smoking status, advising about the best way to quit, and acting on the patient’s response. These are the elements of VBA.

How to engage patients who are diagnosed with a serious mental illness (SMI) and have a 30 second conversation to offer support to quit or cut down.

Information on medications and other stop smoking aids available.

Information on how to refer to Yorkshire Smoke Free and other available support.

The session will be delivered by Debbie Hardwick and Sue Blakeley, senior stop smoking specialists at Yorkshire Smokefree service.
