Non-Medical Prescribing (NMP) Training in South Yorkshire

Non-Medical Prescribing is the term used to describe any prescribing completed by a healthcare professional other than a doctor or dentist. NMP training has many benefits:

Funding for Non-Medical Prescribing course fees is currently available for eligible primary care staff in South Yorkshire. Which roles can become Non-Medical Prescribers?

The Department of Health specifies which registered professionals can become Non-Medical Prescribers. Currently these are:

Independent & Supplementary Prescribers:

  • Nurses/Midwives
  • Pharmacists
  • Physiotherapists
  • Paramedics
  • Podiatrists
  • Optometrists
  • Therapeutic Radiographers

Supplementary Prescribers only:

  • Diagnostic Radiographers
  • Dieticians

Community Practitioner Prescribers:

  • Nurses (Health Visitors & District Nurses)

Which universities offer Non-Medical Prescribing in South Yorkshire?

  • Sheffield Hallam – L6 Non-Medical Prescribing (V300) September or January entry
  • Sheffield Hallam – L7 Non-Medical Prescribing (V300) September or January entry
  • University of Sheffield – L7 Independent/Supplementary Prescribing for nurses (SNM624) September or March entry

Is Funding available for Non-Medical Prescribing?

Funding for course fees only is available through SY ICB METIP (Multi-professional Education & Training Investment Plan) funding.

Employers can submit an NMP funding application (see link below)

We aim to review your application and contact you with an outcome within 2-3 weeks. Please do not apply for the course until you receive a confirmation of funding email, or your application will not be eligible for funding. Confirmation of funding is only valid for the financial year that it is issued in and cannot be carried over into a new financial year.

Does confirmation of funding guarantee a place on the course?

Course places are subject to university availability. Successful applicants will be sent confirmation of funding and invited to apply for the course. If the course you have chosen is full then your application will remain on our waiting list to await the next available round of funding.

What criteria do trainees need to meet to be eligible for NMP training in South Yorkshire?

Applicants need:

  • To have organisational support for time out of practice for study (funding is for course fees only)
  • To have a named Designated Medical Practitioner (DMP) or Designated Prescribing Practitioner (DPP) to provide guidance and supervision of the trainee’s practice-based learning while they are undertaking their training
  • To have appropriate post-registration experience in the relevant specialty
  • To have an appraisal and job description containing NMP
  • To have certificate evidence of a full DBS clearance dated within 3 years prior to their registration as a prescriber
  • To meet the course criteria specified by the university

What happens after the trainee completes the course and qualifies as a prescriber?

Newly qualified prescribers must register with their relevant regulator, provide confirmation of successful annotation to their employer and ensure that they have appropriate indemnity arrangements & support to undertake their prescribing role.
