Open to all registered health and care professionals working in Yorkshire and Humber region

 who want to increase their research knowledge and skills.

About the Internship

The Yorkshire and Humber Community of research practice health and care professionals’ internship offers a bespoke framework that will allow you to personalise your internship experience to meet your career stage and aspiration.

Funded by the NIHR, the Yorkshire and Humber Community of Research Practice regional registered health and care professionals’ internship scheme offers funded opportunities to dip your toes into the research world or enhance your research skills and knowledge that will allow you to personalise your internship experience to meet your career stage and aspiration.

The internships provide 30 days funding to your employer to allow you to undertake the internship programme of work. This is NOT a new job opportunity.

The second cohort for applications from Health and Care Professionals for the Yorkshire and Humber NIHR Internship programme opens today, 1 May 2026 and closes at 17.00 on 19 June 2026.

The eligibility criteria has been extended for cohort 2 to include registered social workers and public health practitioners.

There are four pathways available to apply for:

  • Step into Research
  • Deliver Leadership in Research
  • Grow in Research
  • Or become a leading clinician or practitioner academic in research?

Providing health and care professionals an opportunity to apply, regardless of their research experience.

General Requirements

While each pathway serves different professional circumstances, applicants to the internship award must meet the following general requirements:

  • Be a registered health and care professional
  • Be employed by an institution based in the Yorkshire and Humber region.
  • Demonstrate commitment to professional development and service improvement through research
  • Articulate clear aims for undertaking the internship and how it will benefit both personal practice and the wider team or service.
  • Obtain support from their employer or line manager, where appropriate, to undertake the internship activities.
