Support for practices to access training for an Apprentice Healthcare Assistant. Find out more below.

What is available?

The full HCA Ready Scheme, which ran as an annual cohort, is unfortunately not currently funded for a further cohort. However, HCAs can start the apprenticeship any time. This will bring with it the Senior Healthcare Support Worker Level 2 or Level 3. Information can be found at https://www.instituteforapprenticeships.org/apprenticeship-standards/senior-healthcare-support-worker-v1-3. The apprenticeship would be funded through the practice Digital Apprenticeship Service (DAS) account. If you would like any further help or a chat around the DAS account please let us know.

To find an apprenticeship provider you can use the tool on Gov.Uk website which will enable you to search:  https://findapprenticeshiptraining.apprenticeships.education.gov.uk/courses/151/providers

There is funding available for apprentice HCAs to cover “bolt on” courses through the training hub. The apprentice HCA would book on to the bolt on course with a provider, pay for it and then send us the invoice to get reimbursed. Below are the courses available for funding.

  • Venepuncture
  • ECG
  • Wound care
  • Motivational interviewing and health promotion
  • First aid (this is more in depth than BLS)

You can use any preferred provider for the bolt on courses.

How long is it?

18-month apprenticeship, which can be started at any time (depending on timescales of your chosen provider)

What’s involved?

Individual Apprenticeship providers will be able to provide full details of their course.

Further details about apprenticeships from the employer’s perspective can be found on:

Home | Healthcare Apprenticeship Standards Online

In addition to the apprenticeship, funded primary care specific ‘Bolt-On’ modules are available:

  • Venepuncture
  • ECG
  • Wound care
  • Motivational interviewing and health promotion
  • First aid (Please note: This is different from BLS which is already available within practices)

What funding is available?

Clinical skills training ‘bolt-on modules’ are fully funded and can be reimbursed via the training hub (contact hnyicb.traininghub@nhs.net)

The course is an apprenticeship and there are 3 ways this may be funded – please see the below document.
